Weekly Commentary (Updated Oct. 27, 2023): There were news and shifts to the Oscar race in the past week.

This week’s column focuses on the late-comers of the season including “The Color Purple,” “The Iron Claw” and “Napoleon.”

“All of Us Strangers” led the Gotham Awards nominations while “Past Lives” and “A Thousand and One” were second in line with three apiece.

Ava DuVernay’s “Origin” has been deemed an original screenplay by the WGA. At the same time, Jeff Nichols’ “The Bikeriders” remains in question on whether or not it will be released this year (pending a SAG-AFTRA resolution).

“American Fiction” won its third Audience Award and catapulted in several categories.

Most significant chart gains: Cord Jefferson’s “American Fiction” skyrockets after winning its third Audience Award at the Middleburg Film Festival.

The 96th Oscars will be held on Sunday, March 10, 2024.

The submission deadline for general categories is Nov. 18, 2023. Preliminary shortlist voting will begin on Dec. 18, with the results announced on Dec. 21. The voting period will run from Jan. 11-16, 2024, with the official nominations announcement on Jan. 23.
